CPA and CA CPD Requirements for Forensic Accountants

Check CPA Australia and CA ANZ CPD hours, ethics hours and public practice extras, and see whether your forensic or expert witness training counts.

CPA Australia CPD requires 120 hours over three years, with at least 20 hours each year. CA ANZ sets the same total and annual minimum for chartered accountants, with 90 verifiable hours over the three-year period. Both bodies require ethics training within those totals.

Forensic and expert witness training can count when it builds competence relevant to your work. Court procedure and report-writing courses qualify on that basis, even when an accounting body does not deliver them. Keep evidence of the learning and separate it from routine client work.

CPA Australia CPD Requirements and Hours

CPA Australia members must complete 120 CPD hours over a three-year triennium. At least 20 hours must fall in each year. Completing only the annual minimum gives you 60 hours, so it leaves a shortfall against the three-year total.

Your CPA triennium uses calendar years and depends on admission to membership. The admission cut-off determines whether the first period starts in that year or the next. CPA Australia’s By-Laws set the exact commencement rule. Your CPD record identifies your allocated period.

The ethics requirement is 10 hours per triennium, including at least two verifiable hours each year. These hours are part of the 120-hour total. Earlier trienniums have transitional rules, so apply the requirement attached to your period.

An ethics hour is learning about ethics and professional responsibility that helps you maintain professional competence. Evidence must establish completion. A course on independence, conflicts of interest or ethical decisions in an expert engagement can meet that purpose. General technical training does not automatically become ethics CPD because the work carries ethical duties. CPA Australia explains its ethics requirements and transition rules.

CA ANZ CPD Requirements for Chartered Accountants

CA ANZ requires chartered accountants to complete 120 CPD hours per triennium, including 90 verifiable hours, with at least 20 CPD hours each year. The annual minimum is total CPD under CR 7.3(b), rather than a separate 20-hour verifiable minimum.

CA trienniums follow financial years, with the first period determined by admission and the regulation’s legacy rules. They do not necessarily match your CPA period. CA ANZ monitors compliance through annual notifications and reviews selected members’ records.

The current ethics requirement is six verifiable hours per triennium. The previous rule was two hours. The applicable amount depends on when your triennium commences, as explained in CA ANZ’s CPD guidance. CR 7 sets no separate annual ethics minimum.

For dual members, map an activity against each body’s rules and record it in each applicable period. Meeting one total does not establish that the other body’s evidence or ethics conditions are met. For example, unverified technical reading cannot fill a CA verifiable-hours shortfall.

Public Practice and Registration Extras

Public practice certificate holders must maintain competence for the services they provide, alongside their general CPD totals. Neither body imposes a blanket extra annual hour total solely because you hold a practice certificate.

CPA Australia’s By-Law 9.4(a)(vi) requires a former certificate holder applying again to complete 40 hours relevant to public accounting services in the preceding 12 months. Those hours count towards the general CPD requirement.

Ongoing holders must also meet By-Laws 9.5 and 4.6, including practice review and professional competence obligations.

CA ANZ’s CR 2 Certificate of Public Practice and CR 7 CPD regulations govern practice holders. Ordinary full and pro-rata CPD exemptions do not apply to certificate holders or affiliates. Exceptional circumstances require approval. Applicants must demonstrate competence, and specialisation or registration can add learning requirements.

A standard registered tax agent must complete 120 relevant continuing professional education (CPE) hours over three years, with at least 20 each year. Conditional registrations have different totals. The Tax Practitioners Board’s CPE requirements apply separately from membership CPD.

For registered company auditors, ASIC’s published registration conditions include 120 CPD hours over each registration-based three-year period. Apply your own registration conditions and select training relevant to audit competence. A forensic course does not automatically fulfil an audit-specific learning need. Registered liquidators have the separate requirements explained below.

IPA members follow a different current model. IPA Pronouncement 7 v5.0 requires 40 hours for each one-year financial-year period, comprising 30 verified and 10 unverified hours. Each of its three competency areas requires seven hours, including five verified and two unverified hours. The first two areas are Technical and Product Knowledge and Management and Professional Skills. The third is Professional and Ethical Standards.

The last category includes ethics and professional judgement. Transition and carry-forward provisions apply under the pronouncement.

Public practice certificate holders must also carry compliant professional indemnity insurance for accountants. CPD and insurance are separate obligations. Completing training does not establish that your policy covers forensic investigations or expert witness work.

What Counts as CPD for Accountants

CPD is learning that maintains or develops competence relevant to your current or future professional role. Both bodies recognise learning beyond conventional accounting courses when that connection is clear.

Qualifying activities can include conferences, webinars, courses and technical discussion groups. Researching or writing technical material and preparing training can also count. Record the actual learning, its relevance and supporting evidence. CPA Australia’s activity categories distinguish programmed self-study from structured reading, video or audio.

A CPD hour records time spent learning. For ordinary timed activities, 60 minutes of relevant learning is one hour. Exclude meals, breaks and social sessions. Provider-assigned credit for a recognised programme follows that programme’s rules.

Verifiable CPD has objective evidence that you completed it. A completion certificate, attendance record or independently confirmed training log can support the claim. Merely downloading a webinar or registering for a course does not show you completed the learning.

You can complete CPD at home through live webinars or documented online courses. Location does not limit the hours. CPA Australia caps its structured reading, video and audio category at 10 hours each year. CA ANZ permits up to 30 non-verifiable hours within the normal 120-hour total. Independent technical reading usually belongs there, unless the activity has the evidence required for verifiable CPD.

For complimentary learning, CPA Australia lists member CPD courses and selected webinars. CA ANZ’s Sharing Knowledge webinars include recorded sessions for members. Availability and member eligibility change between offers. Select a relevant session and retain its completion evidence, even when there is no charge.

Forensic and Expert Witness Training as CPD

Training on forensic methods or expert witness duties counts when it develops skills you use in forensic accounting. Relevant subjects include court procedure, expert codes of conduct, report writing and giving evidence.

A course on expert witness duties can develop your understanding of independence and the duty to assist the court. Training on financial expert reports can teach you to distinguish facts from assumptions and explain the basis of an opinion. Claim ethics hours only for the part with an identifiable ethics learning outcome.

Other examples include bank-statement tracing training and a worked course on the lowest intermediate balance rule. Training in forensic data analytics can build skills in testing transactions for possible fraud. Education on accountants’ AML/CTF duties can count where those duties affect your practice.

Routine time spent on a client matter is work, even when you encounter something unfamiliar. CA ANZ does recognise structured on-the-job learning, including supervised development on a new forensic engagement. Document the learning objectives and time, obtain independent verification and use its prescribed evidence form. This category is capped at 50% of the required verifiable hours.

CPA Australia also recognises in-house learning and coaching. Claim the identifiable learning activity, not the entire matter’s billable time.

FinTrace saves forensic accountants hours of statement conversion and review by supplying a searchable ledger and a source-backed findings report. That gives you more time for interpretation and specialist work. Engaging a service for a client matter remains professional work. CPD comes from a separate qualifying learning activity.

Recording CPD and Passing an Audit

A CPD record must show what you learned, when you learned it and how many hours you claim. Keep the provider’s name and activity title, the delivery method and a short explanation of relevance. Mark verifiable and ethics hours separately, with completion evidence attached.

Calculate part hours by dividing learning minutes by 60. A 90-minute webinar gives 1.5 hours. In a hypothetical two-day conference, five learning hours on the first day and four on the second give nine hours. Attendance for only one day earns only the learning hours you completed.

Log preparation of technical material using actual research and learning time. Repeating an unchanged presentation does not create fresh learning merely because another audience attends. Separate ethics content from the rest of a mixed session, so the record explains the ethics credit claimed.

CPA Australia’s By-Law 4.2 requires records for at least 12 months after the relevant triennium ends. CA ANZ’s CR 7.6 requires six years’ retention.

Keeping a combined record for six years meets these membership retention periods, but other registrations can impose their own requirements.

If CPA Australia selects you for review, supply your activity record and any additional evidence requested. Its CPD review process assesses relevance as well as hours. A shortfall can lead to a formal completion agreement. Failure to comply can lead to disciplinary action.

CA ANZ reviews selected records and practice holders’ records through quality review. Non-compliance can lead to exclusion from membership.

Continuing Education for Registered Liquidators and Trustees

Registered liquidators and registered trustees must complete 120 CPE hours over each three-year period starting from their first registration. At least 30 hours must be objectively verifiable by a competent source.

Section 20-5 sets these conditions in both the Insolvency Practice Rules (Corporations) 2016 and the Insolvency Practice Rules (Bankruptcy) 2016. Individual registration conditions can add requirements. ASIC’s liquidator guidance and AFSA’s trustee guidance explain compliance and relevant learning. AFSA is the Australian Financial Security Authority.

Insolvency webinars can count when their content develops the skills or knowledge required for your liquidator or trustee duties. Match the syllabus to those duties before allocating the hours. A provider’s advertised CPD credit does not automatically establish eligibility under your registration conditions.

For a live webinar, keep the attendance confirmation and the agenda identifying the insolvency subjects covered. For a recording, retain completion evidence that shows the learning actually undertaken. Count learning time only and identify whether a competent source can objectively verify it. Treat membership ethics credit separately from the registration’s verifiable-hours requirement.

These registration periods can differ from CPA or CA trienniums. An activity can meet several obligations when it is relevant and meets each body’s conditions. Keep one record of the actual learning, then allocate eligible hours to each requirement and period. Before making your annual declaration, compare your general total, verifiable hours and ethics credit against each membership and registration you hold.
