Is Grok Safe? Grok Privacy for Legal Teams

Is Grok safe to use for work? How xAI uses Grok chats and X posts, the setting that stops it, and what private chat mode keeps.

No, Grok’s consumer service is unsuitable for confidential client information. Training opt-outs reduce one use of your conversations, while Private Chat still allows temporary server retention. Keep client material in systems your firm has approved for that work.

Is Grok Safe to Use for Work?

Grok is suitable only for work questions that disclose no confidential matter information when you use its consumer service. A paid personal subscription does not resolve that restriction. The consumer terms grant broad rights over submitted content, including rights to process and distribute it. They also allow authorised staff to review content for specified business purposes.

Grok’s provider is identified in its consumer policy as SpaceX Super Intelligence LLC, or SpaceXSI, at the former xAI web address. Its consumer FAQ asks users to keep personal and sensitive information out of questions. X’s separate Grok help page warns against sharing confidential information.

For example, a hypothetical paralegal can ask for a plain-language explanation of a public legal concept. Pasting a client’s statement about disputed transfers discloses matter information, even if the paralegal only wants a shorter summary. Replacing the client’s name can leave enough detail to identify the matter.

If you have already entered client details, stop adding information and report the incident through your firm’s internal process. Record what you submitted and the account used. Follow the firm’s incident and record-preservation instructions when requesting deletion.

How xAI Uses Grok Chats and X Posts

Grok’s consumer privacy policy allows the provider to use personal information to develop its service and train models. The policy for the standalone service differs from the X privacy policy governing Grok on X. Manage each account’s controls separately if you use both.

X’s Grok help page says X may share public posts and related metadata with xAI for training. It can also share your Grok inputs and responses. To turn off that training use on X, follow its documented settings path:

  1. Open Settings, then Privacy & Safety.
  2. Select Data sharing and personalization.
  3. Open Grok & Third-party Collaborators.
  4. Under Data Sharing, deselect permission to use your public data and Grok interactions for training and fine-tuning.

Confirm the control is off before starting another conversation. Grok personalization has a separate setting in the same area. Turning off training does not itself turn off personalization. X also says submitting feedback can allow the related conversation to be used for training despite an opt-out.

On the standalone website, open Settings and Data to find Improve the Model. The mobile app puts Improve the model under Settings and Data Controls. Switching it off applies to new conversations.

The standalone privacy policy retains personal information while there is an ongoing business need, with additional legal and safety grounds. It promises deletion within 30 days after you delete a conversation or account, subject to its exceptions. X separately says deleted Grok conversations leave its systems within 30 days unless retained for security or legal reasons.

Treat an opt-out as a change to future training use. It does not establish that a client summary you already submitted has been erased.

Private Chat Mode

Private Chat keeps a standalone Grok conversation out of your visible history and excludes it from model training. The consumer FAQ describes a ghost-shaped control near the top right of the screen. Start a new Private Chat and confirm the mode is active before entering a question.

The consumer privacy policy says Private Chat conversations are deleted from the provider’s systems within 30 days. It permits longer retention for legal, compliance or safety purposes. The consumer FAQ also allows retention of de-identified or pseudonymised content disassociated from your account.

That retention window means a conversation can disappear from your history while remaining on the provider’s servers. Private Chat therefore does not make Grok suitable for client documents. Its stated protections concern the standalone service, so do not assume an ordinary Grok conversation on X has the same mode or deletion behaviour.

For public research, use a question that contains no client facts and apply the available training controls. For a client summary, use your firm’s approved matter system and keep the source document inside its authorised workflow.
