Is Ollama Safe? What It Does and What Stays Local

Is Ollama safe for client documents? What Ollama is, whether it sends data anywhere, where it stores models and how to set it up so data stays local.

It depends: Ollama is safe for client documents only within a controlled local setup, with a local model and a secured computer. Its cloud models send prompts away for processing, so choosing Ollama alone does not establish where a document goes.

Is Ollama Safe for Client Documents?

Ollama keeps prompts on the computer when you use a local model. Its privacy policy says Ollama cannot access content processed locally. That makes it useful for firms that need to draft or summarise without sending the text to a hosted AI service.

The remaining risks sit around that local model. A stolen laptop, malware or another user’s access can expose the documents. An unreviewed model download or connected app adds a separate source of risk. Local processing also says nothing about whether an answer is correct.

For example, a fictional practice might paste an invented attendance note into a local model and ask for a summary. The firm must establish where its chat app saves that note, whether backups copy it elsewhere and who can open the saved conversation. The same checks apply before replacing the invented note with client material.

What Ollama Does

Ollama runs AI models and provides a local interface through which applications send prompts and receive answers. You download a model to the computer, load it and give it text to process. A model is the trained system that generates the answer. Ollama runs that system.

Ollama Inc. provides the service. The local software is free and open source under the MIT licence. Its pricing page separates local use from paid cloud usage. Your computer still supplies the memory and processing power.

The software’s licence and a downloaded model’s licence are separate. Open-source software does not make every model unrestricted or suitable for confidential work.

Ollama documents these default model locations.

  • macOS: ~/.ollama/models
  • Linux: /usr/share/ollama/.ollama/models
  • Windows: C:\Users\%username%\.ollama\models

The OLLAMA_MODELS setting changes that directory. A connected chat application can store conversations elsewhere.

Does Ollama Send Data Anywhere?

Yes, Ollama needs network access for model downloads, and the desktop software downloads updates. Local inference can work without an internet connection once the model is installed. A network connection by itself does not prove that a prompt was uploaded.

Ollama’s privacy policy allows limited device and usage metadata, separate from local prompt content. For cloud models, Ollama processes prompts and responses remotely. The policy says it processes that content transiently and does not use inputs or outputs to train models.

A no-training policy still permits processing on someone else’s servers. For a firm requiring documents to remain on its own laptop, a cloud model fails that requirement. Ollama’s cloud documentation explains how cloud use differs from downloaded models.

To verify a local workflow, use invented text after downloading the model. Disconnect the computer from the internet and confirm the task still completes. Then inspect network activity with the connection restored, including traffic from the chat app. Offline success confirms that task can run locally. It does not prove every connected feature stays local.

Setting Ollama Up Safely

Disable cloud features and keep Ollama reachable only from the computer before introducing client documents. Give the firm’s IT administrator these checks:

  1. Set disable_ollama_cloud to true in ~/.ollama/server.json, preserving other settings. Restart Ollama and confirm the log says Ollama cloud disabled: true.
  2. Keep the default listener at 127.0.0.1:11434. Avoid public tunnels and a bind address of 0.0.0.0, which allows access through other network interfaces.
  3. Download models from a known publisher and review their licence. Keep Ollama patched and review connected apps separately.
  4. Enable full-disk encryption and restrict user access. Include saved chats and document copies in the firm’s backup and retention controls.
  5. Repeat the fictional-document check through the actual app staff will use. If it stops working offline, identify the remote dependency before using client material.

Ollama’s configuration FAQ documents the cloud switch and listener settings. Approve the complete document workflow, including where the chat app saves files, before allowing staff to use it on a matter.
