CommBank Bank Statements: Getting Them for a Matter

Need a CommBank statement for a legal matter? Download it from NetBank or the app, request older or closed account statements, or subpoena the bank.

To get a CommBank bank statement for a matter, download the statement PDF from NetBank or the CommBank app. Request missing historical records from the bank. If another party controls the account, use the disclosure process and, where necessary, a subpoena.

Ask the client for every page of each statement, covering every relevant account and the full requested period. App screenshots leave you chasing missing balances and transactions before the disclosure deadline.

Downloading Statements Online

Download the bank-issued Commonwealth Bank statement PDF from NetBank’s Statements page. CommBank keeps up to seven years of online statements.

  1. Log on to NetBank using the account holder’s own access or your registered authority.
  2. Choose View accounts, then Statements.
  3. Select the account and the issued statement periods needed for the matter.
  4. Select the statements and choose Download.
  5. Open the PDFs and check the account number, covered period and page count.

These are the bank’s published statement download steps. To print a Commonwealth Bank statement, open the downloaded PDF and print every page. Retain the PDF alongside the paper copy.

For a current CommBank statement between the last issued statement and today, choose View accounts, Statements, then Order a statement. CommBank says the online statement arrives within two business days.

For a custom period, use Create summary on the Statements page. This produces an immediate official letter confirming account details and transactions for your chosen period. Use the early-statement and summary options to cover recent activity while preserving the issued statement run.

Getting Statements in the App

Get a bank statement in the CommBank app through the account’s Manage menu.

  1. Log on and tap Accounts.
  2. Choose the relevant account, then tap Manage.
  3. Tap View statement and enter the app PIN if prompted.
  4. Choose the statement date and tap Download.
  5. Save the PDF, open it and send the file through the firm’s document-sharing channel.

Send the actual PDF as an attachment, with every page present. A screenshot of the download or account screen does not give the firm the statement itself.

A Proof of balance is a balance confirmation document with account details. It does not supply the account’s full activity over the requested period. CommBank explains its proof-of-balance document separately. A transaction summary covers chosen activity, while an issued statement fixes the bank’s reporting period.

Statements vs Transaction Listings

Keep the official CommBank statement PDF as the source record for analysis because it preserves the bank’s issued document and complete statement period.

For a transaction account, that includes opening and closing balances and the movements between them. The statement also identifies the account and its holder. Those fields let you test continuity across a run of statements.

A transaction listing can be filtered to a narrow period or a subset of activity. A screenshot can omit rows, account details or the beginning of the period. Neither supplies the same completeness checks as the full issued statement. Ask for the PDF when the requested document is a statement.

A CSV export helps an analyst sort transactions and calculate totals. Retain it with the PDF so the numbers can be traced to the issued record. Use the separate PDF-to-Excel guide for conversion steps.

In a family law matter, define the requested accounts and periods before collecting the files. The divorce bank-statement guide covers that request.

Requesting Older or Closed Account Statements

For statements outside NetBank’s available history, lodge a request with CommBank through a branch or its customer support channel.

Give the bank the account holder’s full name and identifying information, the BSB and account number if known, and the exact period needed. Include former names or addresses that help identify an old account. For a closed account, add its approximate closure period and any old statement showing the account details.

Before a manual request, try the closed-account option in NetBank. Choose View accounts, then Statements, and select Show recently closed accounts. CommBank’s closed-account guidance covers accounts closed within the last two years. Statements issued within the last seven years remain accessible for that window. A newly closed account can take up to two business days to reappear.

Account-specific copy fees can apply. For example, CommBank lists a $2.50 fee for a paper copy of a past or ordered NetBank Saver statement. That is the NetBank Saver paper-copy fee, not a quoted fee for every historical search.

For a manual retrieval, ask the bank to record the required period, delivery format and quoted fee. Obtain the request reference and expected completion time. Lodge it early and allow room for weeks of retrieval or follow-up when planning the matter. Treat the two-business-day early-statement service as a separate option for recent activity.

If an account is missing from NetBank, first establish whether it is closed, outside your authority or outside the online window. A missing online entry does not establish that historical records are unavailable. For other banks and broader historical requests, use the old bank-statements guide.

Credit Card, Loan and Other Account Statements

Select each credit card, home loan or personal loan account separately in NetBank’s View accounts, then Statements, account selector.

Download the issued statements for each available account. If a loan is visible on the account overview but absent from Statements, request its statement history from CommBank. A current loan balance alone does not show repayments and redraw activity over the period.

Treat an offset account as a separate statement request from its linked home loan. Add savings accounts and business accounts to the request inventory. Obtain the issued statement for each account instead of assuming one account’s statement includes the others.

For accounts administered through CommBiz, the business statement path is Accounts, then Online Statements. Select the statement type, period and account before searching.

CommSec trading records come through CommSec. Download share statements through Portfolio, then Statements. Retrieve contract notes through Trade, Manage Orders, then Confirmations. CommSec publishes separate statement guidance and contract-note instructions.

A Commonwealth Direct Investment Account (CDIA) is the cash account. Its bank statement comes through NetBank. Collect the CommSec trading records as well when the matter needs share purchases, sales or holdings.

Getting Statements for Someone Else’s Account

CommBank needs recognised authority before releasing another customer’s account information to you.

For a deceased customer, notify CommBank’s Estate Settlement Services and establish the executor’s or administrator’s authority. Prepare certified copies of the death certificate and will, plus probate or letters of administration where required. The representative must meet the bank’s identification requirements.

CommBank’s estate guidance distinguishes receiving account information from releasing funds and closing accounts. Do not assume every information request requires a grant. A solicitor can receive estate account information after providing a letter of representation stating that they act for the estate. Specify the historical statements required, rather than asking only for the asset letter showing accounts and balances.

An attorney under an enduring power of attorney must register the authority with CommBank before using it to obtain statements. Submit the certified power online or through a branch. Each attorney completes the process individually. Provide identification and any evidence needed for the power’s activation conditions.

CommBank’s attorney setup process allows authorised accounts to be linked to the attorney’s own NetBank access. Once access is registered, use the statement download path for those accounts. The power and account operating arrangements determine whether attorneys act together or separately.

For a living client’s ordinary request, obtain a signed authority identifying the firm, relevant accounts and requested records before approaching the bank. Send it with the request and complete the bank’s authority requirements. The client can also download their own PDFs and send them to the firm. Use registered access, rather than the client’s password.

When the Account Holder Will Not Provide Them

When another party controls the account, request the relevant statements from that party before pursuing compulsory production through the proceeding.

In an Australian family law property matter, address missing statements through the duty of disclosure and seek disclosure orders where needed. A subpoena to CommBank is the later route for relevant bank-held records under the Court’s subpoena process. Other proceedings have their own disclosure and subpoena rules.

The bank’s production responds to the documents and period required by the subpoena. Identify whether the matter needs issued statements, transaction records or other account documents. Keep the produced files as received and record which requested accounts or periods they cover.

The Commonwealth Bank Group publishes legal-notice guidance through Bankwest, which is part of the group. Use the bank-record subpoena guide for the procedural work. Arrange the required document format through the production process and preserve electronic statement files when supplied.

Checking the Statements Before Analysis

Check each account’s statement run for missing periods and balance continuity before sending the bundle for analysis.

  1. List every account requested and match it to the files received.
  2. Put the statement periods in sequence and identify uncovered periods or overlaps.
  3. Compare each closing balance with the next opening balance for the same account.
  4. Check page numbers so a multi-page statement has no missing pages.
  5. Follow transfer descriptions to identify accounts whose statements are still needed.

Chase linked offset and savings accounts when transfers point to them. Add other identified CommBank accounts to the request list. A transfer description is a lead to another account, not proof that you already have its complete records.

For example, in a hypothetical two-year request, a full transaction-account run can still leave the bundle incomplete if regular transfers go to a missing offset account. Request the offset statements for the same relevant period. The statement reconciliation guide explains the balance checks in more detail.

FinTrace saves hours of manual statement review by accepting CommBank PDFs and scanned paper as held, without sorting or renaming the bundle. The service processes large volumes into one searchable Excel ledger and a clear findings report. Suspicious transactions and gaps are clearly flagged, with each finding cited to the source PDF filename and page.

Forensic accountants can use that ledger for their own analysis and spend more time interpreting the findings. To Request a matter assessment, outline the accounts, approximate pages and required timeframe. Statements follow the assessment and accepted quote.
