How to Get Old Bank Statements in Australia
How long do banks keep records, and how do you get old statements from ANZ, Commonwealth Bank or a closed account for a legal matter?

To get old bank statements in Australia, download the available PDFs from internet banking, then request missing periods from the bank in writing. If someone else controls the account and refuses to cooperate, use the disclosure process or a targeted bank subpoena through the relevant court.
For an executor investigating earlier withdrawals, the online history can be much shorter than the records the bank still holds. Request the whole period you need, including closed accounts, before deciding that a missing statement is unavailable.
Getting Old Bank Statements Quickly
Start with the account holder’s online statements and make one written request for the missing periods. You need access to the account or authority to act for its holder. A beneficiary’s interest in an estate does not by itself provide that authority.
- Ask the client to sign into their own official banking app or internet banking and open Statements. Select each required period, then download or share the bank-issued PDF to a secure matter folder. Open the saved file to confirm all pages are present.
- List each account and the period required. Include the BSB and account number, former account names, previous addresses and approximate closure year where known.
- Send the bank a written request for every missing statement period. State your authority and ask for archived bank-issued PDFs, including all pages, opening balances and closing balances. Provide the client’s signed authority when requesting records as their practitioner.
- Obtain the retrieval fee and expected delivery time before authorising an archive search. Keep the request reference and explain any court timetable the bank must consider.
- Compare the delivered PDFs with your requested account list and periods. Follow up specific missing periods before treating the bundle as complete.
An interim statement covers activity since the last statement. A transaction export is a separate record and can omit statement details. Preserve it as additional material if useful, while requesting the actual statements needed for the matter.
When an account holder refuses access, send a focused disclosure request identifying the missing accounts and periods. Your lawyer can then assess whether a subpoena for bank records is appropriate.
How Long Do Banks Keep Records
Banks must generally retain transaction records for seven years from when the records are made under section 107 of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006. The required records must allow individual transactions to be reconstructed. This is a record-retention rule, distinct from the statement history displayed in an app. See Part 10 of the Act.
Closing an account does not cancel an existing retention obligation. It can remove your online access, so request records directly when the account no longer appears. The seven-year transaction rule also does not guarantee that every older statement remains available in its original PDF format.
Banks can hold older information beyond that minimum. Macquarie’s personal banking guidance describes online statement history of two to ten years, depending on the account. Suncorp Bank provides a separate request route for statements outside its online collection. Older archive searches can take longer or attract charges, depending on the bank and product.
If the bank says a closed account cannot be found, supply an old statement, former name or previous address. Ask whether its archive search covered the period and account identifiers you supplied. Keep its written response if it confirms that records no longer exist.
Compare Archived Statement Routes at Major Banks
Online history is a starting point for an archive request. Compare the available period with the accounts and years your matter requires, including accounts already closed.
| Bank | Available online history | Archived and closed-account position |
|---|---|---|
| Commonwealth Bank | Its published guidance describes up to seven years of online statements. | Closure can limit online access. Identify the missing periods separately from the online collection. |
| ANZ | Its statement service covers available statements for open and closed accounts. | Historical online access ends when all linked accounts have closed. The available collection does not establish that the bank holds no older records. |
| Westpac | Up to seven years of statements through its online services. | Extra copies are available through the bank. Identify closed accounts and any period outside the displayed history in the archive request. |
| NAB | Up to seven years in Internet Banking and two years in the app. | Closed-account statements can remain online for up to seven years from the search if online statements were enabled before closure. |
The banks’ official guidance distinguishes available downloads from a complete archive search: CommBank online statements, ANZ statements, Westpac statements and NAB statements.
Prepare one account schedule showing the holder, account identifiers, required periods and gaps. Establish the requester’s authority and obtain a written quote for retrieval. Confirm whether the bank can supply bank-issued PDFs, scanned archive copies or transaction records in another format. A retention obligation does not promise an original PDF for every period.
Use the dedicated Commonwealth Bank, ANZ, Westpac and NAB guides for each institution’s download and archive-request workflow. Reconcile the returned records to your schedule before closing the request.
Accounts Belonging to Someone Else
To request another person’s statements, establish your legal authority with the bank before requesting the history. Explain the capacity in which you act and the period needed. Do not use the deceased person’s banking login.
For an estate, the bank commonly needs the death certificate and your identification. Supply the will naming the executor, a grant of probate or letters of administration, as applicable to the estate. Probate confirms the executor’s authority. Letters of administration establish the administrator’s authority where that grant is required.
ANZ’s bereavement process and estate checklist require certified documents and specify when probate or administration papers are needed. Ask the estate team to include the pre-death periods needed for the enquiry, not just the closing statement.
An attorney acting for a living account holder must provide the power of attorney and identification. The bank must recognise the authority and its scope before releasing records. A financial attorney’s authority ends at the account holder’s death. The estate representative then uses the deceased-estate process.
A beneficiary who wants to examine earlier withdrawals can request the records from the executor or obtain legal advice about production in the dispute. Executor duties explains how the representative accounts for the estate’s administration.
When the Other Side Holds the Statements
Use disclosure to obtain relevant statements from a party who has possession or control of them. In Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia financial or property matters, full and frank disclosure covers the party’s financial circumstances. The court’s disclosure guidance explains the continuing duty under the Family Law Act and Family Law Rules.
Request the accounts and periods that answer the issues in dispute. A closing balance alone does not explain earlier withdrawals or transfers. The divorce bank-statement guide explains how those records support a property matter.
Civil proceedings follow the rules and orders of the court hearing the case. Family-law disclosure duties do not automatically apply to an estate or commercial dispute. In the Federal Court, formal discovery requires an order and the request must be proportionate. Its Central Practice Note encourages focused document exchange before unnecessary discovery expense.
A subpoena to the bank can be appropriate when the records are relevant and the party’s production remains incomplete or unreliable. The bank produces records through the court process, subject to the subpoena’s scope and any objections. Your lawyer must select the correct bank entity and account period. The bank-record subpoena guide covers that process without expanding an ordinary customer request into compulsory production.
Checking a Long Run of Statements is Complete
Check statement periods account by account, then reconcile each statement’s closing balance to the next statement’s opening balance. A pile of PDFs can cover many years while still missing one account or a period in the middle.
Create a statement register with a row for each PDF. Record the bank and account identifier, currency, period covered, page count and opening and closing balances. Keep the original filenames so each register entry leads back to the supplied document.
- Sort the register by account and statement period. Look for missing periods and duplicate copies. Statement cycles can be monthly, quarterly or longer, so compare the actual coverage dates.
- Check page numbering within each statement. A document marked Page 1 of 4 needs four pages, including any continuation pages containing transactions.
- Compare adjacent balances for the same account and currency. A mismatch can signal a missing statement, a missing page or an account-identification error.
- Reconcile opening balance plus credits minus debits to closing balance. Include fees and interest, and preserve the bank’s debit or credit convention for overdrafts and cards.
- Send the bank or disclosing party a list of the exact gaps. Keep its response beside the register so unavailable records remain visible.
For a hypothetical savings account, one statement closes at $8,200 and the next opens at $6,700. That $1,500 difference needs explanation before the run can be treated as continuous. A missing period is one possible cause, not proof of an unauthorised withdrawal.
FinTrace saves lawyers and forensic accountants hours of statement review by consolidating large PDF bundles into one searchable ledger and a readable findings report. Its report identifies gaps in the supplied statements and flags suspicious transactions, with the source PDF filename and page beside each finding. Mixed scans and digital statements can be supplied as held, without sorting or renaming them first.
For records intended for court, preserve the originals alongside the register and analysis. Using bank statements as evidence explains how to connect a transaction to the underlying record.
Requesting Statements From Other Banks
Download the PDFs from the bank or money app that issued the account, then use that provider’s support channel for missing history. The name printed on an older statement can differ from the entity now responsible for the account.
St George, Bank of Melbourne and BankSA
St.George, Bank of Melbourne and BankSA are divisions of Westpac Banking Corporation. Start through the original brand’s banking service so the request identifies the right account records.
| Brand | PDF download and older-statement route | Fees and delivery |
|---|---|---|
| St.George | In the app, select the account and Statements. In Internet Banking, select the account and View eStatements. For an archived statement, use Manage My Accounts, then Order a Printed Statement. Contact a banker for closed-loan records or history absent online. | Duplicate statements for personal transaction, savings and investment accounts have no fee under its clearer-fees policy. The next-business-day estimate is for an interim statement, not a historical archive search. |
| Bank of Melbourne | Select the account’s eStatements in the app or Internet Banking. For older issued statements, use Manage My Accounts, then Order a Printed Statement. Its Request a document form covers specified unavailable closed-account documents. | Its clearer-fees policy removes duplicate-statement fees for personal transaction, savings and investment accounts. Obtain the delivery estimate for the requested historical period. |
| BankSA | Use the account’s Statements section in the BankSA app or Internet Banking. For archived copies, use the Internet Banking statement-ordering service. Use BankSA’s Request a document form for eligible unavailable closed-account documents. | Duplicate-statement fees are removed for personal transaction, savings and investment accounts. Ask BankSA for the delivery estimate for the archive request. |
The St.George statement help and Bank of Melbourne account help explain their online ordering steps. Their Internet Banking ordering service allows up to 14 statements per request. Split a longer run into further requests.
BankSA is the brand to use for a “Bank SA statement” request. Its account help and Request a document form provide the current channels. The document form covers selected records for accounts closed less than seven years ago. Deceased-customer requests use the bereavement team instead.
The equivalent Bank of Melbourne document form has the same selected-document limits. A form for closed-loan documents does not replace a request for a complete transaction-account history.
ING, Ubank and Up
For an ING bank statement, select the account in the app, then Manage and Statements. For statements older than two years or closed-account records, use the ING website’s Online Banking Statements menu. ING’s help page explains the PDF download. ING Bank (Australia) Limited is part of ING Group.
If the period is absent, send a secure message or contact ING for the missing copies and request terms.
For a Ubank statement, select the account in the app, open its settings and choose Statements. In online banking, select the account and View statements. Choose PDF from the available download formats.
Ubank is part of National Australia Bank Limited. Use Ubank support for an unavailable or closed-account period, identifying any earlier account number after a platform change. Ubank’s statement instructions explain both interfaces.
To get an Up bank statement, open the Up tab and choose Statements for current and previous monthly records. Up also allows generated statements for selectable periods. If the required history is absent, request it through Talk to Us in the app. Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Limited issues Up’s banking products. Up’s statement help gives the app route.
ING, Ubank and Up’s cited download instructions do not give a fixed archive fee or delivery time. Specify the required period in the support request and obtain those terms before authorising a separate retrieval service.
Bendigo, Bankwest, Suncorp, BOQ and ME
| Provider and banking entity | Where to get the statement PDF | Older or closed-account request |
|---|---|---|
| Bendigo Bank, Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Limited | In e-banking, select the account, then Statements. Download the required PDF from the list. | Request absent periods through Bendigo support or a branch. |
| Bankwest, a division of Commonwealth Bank of Australia | In online banking, choose Accounts, then Statements and the account. For home loans, the app route is Property, the loan account, then Statements. | Message Bankwest in the app. Available closed-account eStatements have a Closed accounts section if you registered before closure. |
| Suncorp Bank, Norfina Limited within ANZ | Choose the account and eStatements in the app, or eStatements in Internet Banking. | Send a secure Internet Banking message or contact Suncorp Bank for older copies. Its help page describes this service as free. Closed-account access depends on eStatements and online banking remaining enabled. |
| BOQ, Bank of Queensland Limited | In myBOQ, choose Profile, then Statements & docs and the account. Legacy BOQ Internet Banking has its eStatements service. | Request missing copies through the relevant BOQ support channel or branch. Identify whether the account uses myBOQ or legacy Internet Banking. |
| ME, a division of Bank of Queensland Limited | For legacy ME accounts, use Internet Banking, then Accounts and View statements. Choose the account and PDF. ME Go accounts use their app’s statement service. | Contact ME for a closed account’s earlier records. Legacy ME online statements become inaccessible after account closure. |
The Bendigo e-banking guide and Bankwest home-loan guide explain the downloads. Suncorp’s eStatement help sets out its archive and closed-account routes. Suncorp Bank’s ownership by ANZ does not mean the request starts in the ANZ app.
BOQ’s statement help identifies myBOQ and legacy banking channels. BOQ says its eStatements are free. ME’s statement instructions cover the legacy service.
The other cited guides do not set out a fixed archive charge or delivery commitment. For records requiring staff retrieval, request the fee and expected delivery time with the missing-period list.
Great Southern Bank, Heritage and Macquarie
Great Southern Bank is the trading name of Credit Union Australia Limited.
Log into online banking, choose eStatements and enter the required range, then Show eStatements. Its eStatement guide describes up to seven years of personal statements. An active customer can retain access after an individual account closes. Contact the bank for periods outside that collection or where online access has ended.
Heritage is a trading name of Heritage and People’s Choice Ltd, the merged customer-owned bank adopting the People First Bank brand. Use Heritage’s Transactions & Statements help to reach its statement-ordering route. For an unavailable or closed-account run, call Heritage on 13 14 22 or use its contact service. Identify the original Heritage account when requesting older records through the merged bank.
Macquarie personal accounts are issued by Macquarie Bank Limited. Select I want to for your account. Choose View account statements and reports in online banking or View account statements in the app.
Macquarie’s statement guide describes two to ten years of history depending on the account. Request closed-account records or absent statements through live chat. Macquarie says a closed-account statement request can attract a fee.
Great Southern Bank and Heritage’s cited help pages do not specify an archive fee or delivery time. Macquarie does not give a fixed amount or turnaround for its closed-account service. Include a request for those terms when specifying the missing history.
Citibank, HSBC, Revolut and Wise
For former Citibank Australian consumer accounts, establish whether the product moved to NAB. For migrated Citibank Plus accounts, NAB’s transfer information says earlier Citi statements are retrievable through NAB Internet Banking or by calling 13 22 65. Give NAB the former Citi account details and the period, including records from before migration. A corporate Citi account is a different relationship and needs Citi’s own channel.
HSBC Bank Australia Limited provides up to seven years of statements online. Select the account, Manage, then View/Download Statements. The app also provides historical statements. For paper copies or older unavailable periods, contact HSBC on 1300 308 008. HSBC’s online-banking help gives the statement route.
For a Revolut statement, choose Home, then Accounts and the currency account. Open its options menu, select Statement and choose the period and PDF format, then Generate. Repeat for each currency needed.
The Australian provider is Revolut Payments Australia Pty Ltd, trading as Revolut Bank Australia. Revolut’s Australian statement instructions explain the currency selection. Use in-app support if the needed period or a closed account is inaccessible.
For a Wise statement, select Statements and reports, then create a statement for the required currencies and period. Choose PDF and download each period of up to 365 days.
Wise Australia Pty Ltd provides the Australian payment service. Wise’s statement guide explains the download and optional signed document. A currency statement covers activity through the Wise currency accounts. Export the Transactions history separately for activity paid through external methods.
The cited NAB migration, HSBC, Revolut and Wise instructions do not give a fixed archive fee or turnaround. Use the identified provider’s support route for inaccessible history and request written retrieval terms. Keep each foreign-currency statement in its original currency, with its opening and closing balances, so transfers can be followed across both sides of an exchange.
For ING, Suncorp Bank, Bankwest, BOQ, Bendigo and Macquarie, a client’s own download uses the client’s authorised banking access. A practitioner requesting records needs the bank’s accepted client authority. Executors and administrators use the estate process with evidence of appointment. Attorneys provide the power and identification for the bank to recognise its scope. These authority documents do not turn a support request into compulsory production.
If a compulsory request is needed, identify the legal entity that holds the particular records before issuing it. A group’s ownership of a brand does not establish the correct recipient. Match the account and period to that entity, then confirm its service requirements and the applicable court rules.
Macquarie’s legal-notice guidance illustrates the difference. It directs service to the Proper Officer of the applicable entity at its registered office by post or hand delivery. It does not accept service by email or fax. Certain subsidiaries have a different office.
Its guidance provides an electronic conduct-money payment route and requests the payment receipt by email. It publishes no universal conduct-money amount or promised production format.
Define the account records and periods required, request usable electronic copies and resolve production arrangements under the court process. Keep service and payment evidence with the matter file.
For a transferred account, ask the current custodian to identify whether its search includes pre-transfer history. Reconcile each production against the original account identifiers, currencies and requested periods. Record any excluded period or unavailable format explicitly.
Statements and Account Confirmation Letters
An official bank statement records transactions over a period. A bank-issued balance certificate or account-confirmation letter proves narrower facts, such as the account holder, account number or balance.
Ask for the record that proves the required fact. A lender assessing spending needs the requested transaction history. A recipient verifying account ownership might accept an account-confirmation letter. NAB’s guidance distinguishes account statements from proof-of-balance statements.
Keep the bank-issued record unedited. Removing transactions creates a modified copy and can conceal information the recipient requires. If the recipient needs confirmation without transaction details, obtain the appropriate bank-issued letter instead.
How Far Back Can You Get Bank Statements?
You can obtain the online history your bank makes available and request older records from its archives. These are separate from the statutory retention minimum. Seven-year retention does not guarantee that every bank supplies every older record, or that all records exist as statement PDFs.
For a closed account, give the bank the former account number and holder details, the closure period and the history you need. Ask it to identify any part of the requested period it cannot supply. Keep the response with the statement register so a later reviewer can distinguish a documented gap from an overlooked request.
For an application, confirm the recipient’s required period and format first. If it asks for three months of bank statements, obtain official copies covering the whole period, including every page. Use an account-confirmation letter only when it proves the fact the recipient requests. Retain the original PDFs securely with the application record and any legal matter they support.
