NAB Bank Statements: Getting Them for a Matter
Your client banks with NAB and the matter needs statements. Download the PDF online or in the NAB app, or request older and closed account statements.

Download a NAB bank statement PDF through Internet Banking or the NAB app. For records outside online access, request copies from NAB with the account details and your authority to receive them.
For a legal matter, ask for the issued statements covering each account and the required period. A transaction list can help identify activity, but it does not give you the same complete statement record.
Downloading Statements Online
Use NAB Internet Banking for up to seven years of statements.
- Have the client sign in with their NAB ID.
- Open Accounts, then Account statements.
- Select the account and Date range, including a custom search range.
- Search, select up to 25 statements and Download.
A custom search finds issued statements within the range. It does not create a statement with new opening and closing dates. Download every statement overlapping the matter’s period, even when its first or last transactions sit outside that period.
For an up-to-date statement, order a current account statement through Internet Banking. NAB’s processing cut-off determines whether it arrives the next or following business day. NAB’s statement guide explains the timing.
Getting Statements in the App
The NAB app gives access to up to two years of statements.
- Sign in and select the account.
- Tap Statements and the closing date required.
- Accept the security message.
- Use Share to save or send the PDF.
Send the file through your firm’s agreed document channel. Open the received attachment and confirm it contains all pages, belongs to the correct account and covers the requested period.
The app’s Download your recent transactions creates a transaction report. Use Internet Banking for older statements or closed accounts. Request unavailable records from NAB.
Statements vs Transaction Listings
An issued NAB statement gives the account identity, statement period and balances alongside the transactions for that period. Those details let you reconcile one statement with the next and check the set’s continuity.
A transaction listing contains the activity returned by a search. NAB supports transaction exports, but the PDF statement remains the source record for your analysis. Keep an export as supplementary working data.
An export filtered to credits could hide withdrawals. A selected date range could also stop before fees or interest were posted. Request the complete issued PDF even when the client has already supplied a spreadsheet or a recent-transactions PDF.
Use the statement’s opening balance plus credits less debits to check its closing balance. Then compare that closing balance with the next statement’s opening balance for the same account. A listing without those period balances cannot perform both checks.
Requesting Older or Closed Account Statements
For a closed account, try Accounts, Account statements, then Closed or Hidden Accounts in Internet Banking. Access depends on having selected online statements before closure and remains limited to seven years from the search.
If records are absent, request historical copies through a NAB branch or the appropriate banking team. Call 13 22 65 for personal banking or 13 10 12 for business banking. A business banker can also handle the enquiry. Provide the account holder’s name, account number and required start and end dates. Include the former business name and account closure details for a closed business account.
Ask for issued statements, including the final closing statement. Have NAB record the request reference, the records it will search and the delivery method. Obtain any retrieval charge before authorising paid work.
For individual and qualifying small-business customers, the Banking Code of Practice sets a 30-calendar-day period for copies of statements in the bank’s possession. It permits a reasonable fee and has an exception for a statement already supplied within the preceding three months. That period is not a promise that records beyond online history still exist.
Lodge historical requests early. Allow retrieval time in the matter’s timetable and diarise the response against the request reference. Use the older bank statements guide when the missing records extend across several banks.
NAB Connect has a separate closed-account availability rule based on when the account closed. Its statement guidance gives the eligibility boundary. A business account closed two years ago requires a bank request if it is unavailable through the client’s banking access.
Credit Card, Loan and Other Account Statements
Request NAB credit card and home loan statements separately from the everyday transaction account. In Internet Banking, use the account selector within Account statements to locate each facility. A mortgage repayment appearing in a transaction account does not show the loan’s full balance or redraw activity.
For a business using NAB Connect, open Accounts and Statements. Select the account and search. Its Order statement function requests an out-of-cycle statement, available within one business day.
Ask the client about savings accounts, mortgage offset accounts and business accounts, including facilities held jointly or through an entity. An offset has its own transaction record. The loan statement and offset statement answer different questions.
Identify the legal account holder before requesting company records. A director’s personal NAB access or personal power of attorney does not establish authority over every company account.
Getting Statements for Someone Else’s Account
NAB needs to establish your authority before releasing another customer’s records. Use the process that matches the relationship, then request the particular accounts and periods.
Executors and Administrators
Provide proof of death and your identification. Supply the will naming the executor or the documents establishing the administrator’s appointment. Use originals or properly certified copies. NAB’s estate guidance explains the documents it uses to establish authority.
Separate access to information from instructions to distribute money. Under the Banking Code, an identified estate representative can request account information while a required grant of probate or letters of administration is pending. NAB can require additional documents to establish who represents the estate.
Request historical statements and the date-of-death balance together through NAB Bereavement Services on 1300 911 451. NAB acts on account-information instructions within 14 business days after receiving the required authority documents and verification of death. If the estate’s lawyer makes the request, identify the estate and the representative who has appointed the firm.
Attorneys
Register the power of attorney at a NAB branch before requesting statement access. Bring the original document or a certified copy and identification. An enduring power activated by loss of capacity can also require a medical certificate.
NAB completes the required identity checks before processing account access. The registered attorney can view statements within the document’s powers and restrictions. NAB’s power-of-attorney process distinguishes personal accounts from company accounts.
Lawyers With Client Authority
Have the client sign an authority expressly permitting NAB to disclose statements to the named lawyer or firm. Specify the account holder, nominated accounts and period, plus the firm’s contact and delivery details. Submit it with the request so NAB can validate consent and the signatory’s authority.
Use an account-specific NAB authority when the facility requires one. For example, NAB’s business credit card third-party authority expressly permits receipt of statement copies and requires the authorised business signatory’s approval. Avoid giving the firm transaction powers when the task only requires records.
The client can also download their own PDFs and send them to you. They retain their banking credentials throughout that route.
When the Account Holder Will Not Provide Them
In an Australian family-law property matter, ask the other party for the identified NAB accounts and missing periods first. Record the request and the deficiency in their response. The Court’s disclosure guidance explains the ongoing duty and the available disclosure procedures.
If voluntary disclosure remains incomplete, consider an order for disclosure. A subpoena to NAB is the route to obtain relevant bank-held records through the court when necessary. The Court’s subpoena guidance requires attempts to obtain the documents first.
Identify the statements and accounts needed in the document request. Production is governed by the subpoena, relevant court rules and any objection or order. Receive and inspect the bank records through the court’s authorised process.
Use the bank-record subpoena guide for the procedural steps. NAB publishes legal-notice guidance for requests directed to the bank. Request copies of the issued statements in the document description, with electronic copies where appropriate. Preserve the files and any covering correspondence received through production.
Checking the Statements Before Analysis
Check the NAB statement set account by account before treating it as a continuous record.
- Record the account holder and account number for each distinct account.
- List each statement’s opening and closing dates, then mark missing periods or overlapping copies.
- Confirm every page is present, including transaction pages and the final closing balance.
- Match each closing balance to the next opening balance. Investigate a mismatch by checking account identity, missing pages and omitted statements.
- Follow transfer descriptions to the counterparty, meaning the person or account on the other side of the transfer. Request the corresponding statement where it belongs within the matter.
For example, a hypothetical business account’s first supplied statement opens with $18,000. If the preceding statement closes at $12,000, the $6,000 difference requires explanation before you analyse the set as continuous. A missing intervening statement or the wrong account could explain it.
Follow up transfers to linked NAB accounts and to ubank, which is part of NAB. A group relationship does not put the ubank statement into the supplied NAB bundle. Check the recipient account details before requesting further records.
For family-law scope, use the divorce bank statements guide. If a supplied PDF raises authenticity concerns, use the bank statement authenticity checks alongside the completeness review.
FinTrace saves hours of statement conversion and review by turning NAB PDFs, including scanned paper, into one searchable Excel ledger and a clear findings report. Supply statements as held without sorting or renaming the bundle. Findings identify suspicious transactions, follow transfers and cite the source PDF filename and page, putting the supporting evidence directly at hand.
Lawyers and forensic accountants use the ledger for further analysis while the report brings the findings together. FinTrace performs this statement-analysis work at a fraction of the cost of manual review or engaging a forensic accountant for the same work. Request a matter assessment with the approximate pages, accounts and timeframe. Send the statements after assessment and quote acceptance.
