Westpac Bank Statements: Getting Them for a Matter

Before disclosure closes, get the right Westpac bank statement: download the PDF online or in the app, request old statements or reach a closed account.

Updated

Get a Westpac bank statement PDF through Online Banking or the Westpac App, then request any older or unavailable records from the bank. For a deceased customer, start with Westpac’s Estates Management Team so the executor’s authority is recorded before statements are released.

Define the accounts and period your matter needs before asking for documents. A three-year request can include active accounts, an account closed last year and transfers into other accounts that need separate statements.

Downloading Statements Online

Download issued Westpac statements from Overview, then Statements, in Online Banking. Westpac provides up to seven years of eligible eStatements. Registration and a valid email address are prerequisites for eStatements. Westpac’s eStatement guidance explains eligibility.

  1. Sign in to Westpac Online Banking using the account holder’s own access or your registered authority.
  2. Open Overview, then Statements.
  3. Select the account under Active accounts.
  4. Enter the required date range or choose a preset range, then select Search.
  5. Select Download PDF for each relevant statement and save every page.

Open each file and check its account number and covered period. Selecting a search range finds issued statements. It does not create a statement with those exact start and end dates.

For a request covering the last three months, download enough issued statements to cover the whole period. If the latest statement stops short, obtain the remaining activity separately. Westpac’s Transactions Report supports a custom period or activity since the last statement on eligible accounts.

For a formal interim statement, call Westpac or visit a branch and request a statement to the required cut-off. Westpac’s personal deposit account terms allow more frequent statements by phone or branch. Its online document-request form excludes statements outside the usual cycle. Identify whether the recipient needs a statement or will accept a Transactions Report before placing the request.

Getting Statements in the App

Get issued bank statement PDFs in the Westpac App through Smart Search. Use the latest version of the app and follow Westpac’s statement download instructions.

  1. Search for Statements in the Smart Search bar.
  2. Tap Statements (incl. closed accounts).
  3. Choose the account under Active accounts.
  4. Tap the statement period you need.
  5. Use the share icon to download the PDF or send a copy through your firm’s agreed document channel.

Ask the client to send the PDF attachment with every page. Screenshots of the account screen do not capture the full statement.

The app retrieves issued statements for eligible accounts. It does not create an arbitrary-period account statement through the download steps. Some products continue to receive paper statements, including certain mortgage-linked offset arrangements.

For a missing account, try Online Banking’s account and statement lists. If the statement remains unavailable, request it from Westpac. Changing devices does not make an ineligible product eligible for eStatements.

Statements vs Transaction Listings

Keep the issued Westpac statement PDF as the source record for the matter. The statement identifies the account and statement period and carries the period’s opening and closing balances. Those balances let you test whether one statement continues from the previous one.

A selected transaction listing can show activity without proving full coverage of the statement period. Westpac’s Proof of Balance and Transactions Reports are downloadable PDFs on bank letterhead. They include the account holder’s details and current balance, but serve different purposes. Proof of Balance records the current balance. A Transactions Report covers selected activity and can fill the interval after an issued statement.

A CSV export helps you sort amounts and filter transactions in a spreadsheet. Retain it alongside the PDFs if useful, with its selected period recorded. Keep the original statement PDFs unchanged so analysis can refer back to the bank-issued record. Use the PDF-to-Excel guide when you need the separate conversion process.

Requesting Older or Closed Account Statements

Request statements older than seven years by calling Westpac on 132 032, as its closed-account guidance directs. Start historical requests well before your disclosure deadline and record the bank’s response and expected delivery time.

For eligible closed accounts within the online history, try the download route first. In Online Banking, open Overview, then Statements, choose Closed accounts and select the account. Search the period, open the statement number and download the PDF.

In the app, use Statements (incl. closed accounts) and follow the closed-account prompts.

Closed-account access has restrictions. Eligible closed savings and transaction accounts are available online for single holders, while eligible closed home loans include joint holders. Closed card statements are available to the primary cardholder. An executor needs the estate authority route below, rather than the deceased customer’s login.

For a bank request, provide the account holder’s full name, BSB and account number if known. Include former addresses, approximate closure timing and the precise period required. Attach the authority for the person requesting the records. Ask for all statement pages, including the final closure statement.

Westpac’s personal deposit account terms list duplicate statements at no fee. They also exclude duplicate issue within five business days of the original statement date. That restriction is not a historical-retrieval turnaround promise. Record any retrieval charge and delivery estimate when Westpac accepts your particular request. For other banks and broader history requests, use the old bank statements guide.

Credit Card, Loan and Other Account Statements

Ask for Westpac credit card and home loan statements as well as transaction account statements. Eligible savings, mortgage and credit card accounts linked to the banking profile use the same Statements area. Select each account separately and check that the downloaded PDF belongs to it.

For credit cards, identify the primary cardholder and include any replaced card history relevant to the period. For a home loan, collect both the loan statements and the separate offset account statements. The loan balance and offset activity answer different questions.

Also ask about savings accounts, business accounts and accounts that were closed during the requested period. A business account can require access through its business banking profile or an authorised business user. Record paper-only accounts on the request list so the absence of an online PDF does not remove them from the matter.

Getting Statements for Someone Else’s Account

Establish the requester’s authority before asking Westpac to release another person’s statements. An executor, attorney and lawyer acting for a living client use different routes.

Executors and Administrators

Contact the Estates Management Team and complete Westpac’s Deceased Customer Notification & Estate Form. Westpac’s estate process limits account information to an authorised estate representative or the estate’s legal representative.

A named executor supplies a certified copy of the Will as evidence of entitlement. Provide the required certified identification and death documentation. An administrator supplies their appointment documents. If a solicitor is engaged, include the solicitor’s letter confirming that engagement. Keep this statement request separate from instructions to release funds, which have additional requirements.

List the historical periods and closed accounts expressly. Westpac’s initial Certificate of Product shows balances, so it does not replace the requested statement history. For the administration account itself, use the deceased estate bank account guide.

Attorneys

Register the enduring power of attorney with Westpac before requesting records under that authority. The attorney must attend a branch in person to activate access. Bring the completed original power or a copy certified by a lawyer or Justice of the Peace, plus identification for each attorney.

Westpac’s power of attorney instructions explain the branch process. Once the authority is recorded, request the specified statement periods through the access Westpac establishes.

Lawyers Acting With Client Authority

The simplest route is for the client to download and send their own PDFs. For a direct bank request, obtain signed written authority identifying the client, relevant accounts and your firm. Specify the statement periods and permission to release those records to you. Submit it with the request so Westpac can establish the permitted access.

If ongoing online access is needed, Westpac has a Third Party Access Authority process. It requires the form, identity documents and witnessed signatures at a branch. View-only access avoids giving transaction authority. Arrange ongoing access separately from a one-off request for copies.

When the Account Holder Will Not Provide Them

Start with a written request to the account holder for the specified Westpac accounts and periods. If disclosure fails in proceedings, consider an order for production under the rules governing that matter. Use a subpoena to Westpac when the required records must be obtained from the bank.

In Australian family law proceedings, the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia says to attempt to obtain the documents before requesting a subpoena. Estate and insolvency proceedings follow their own court rules. Keep the requested account and period specific to the evidence needed.

Westpac’s court-document contact guidance identifies the Proper Officer for Westpac Banking Corporation, including its St.George, Bank of Melbourne and BankSA divisions. Define the statement records sought in the subpoena and identify the account and period. Arrange the production format through the court process, including readable electronic copies where appropriate. For the procedural steps, use the bank records subpoena guide.

Checking the Statements Before Analysis

Check each account’s statement run against the requested period before analysis starts. Use a simple register with the account identifier, period covered and missing documents.

  1. Confirm each PDF’s account holder and account number match the account on your list.
  2. Read the statement periods in order and record gaps or overlaps.
  3. Compare each closing balance with the next statement’s opening balance.
  4. Check page counts and obtain any missing pages.
  5. Follow transfers to other supplied accounts and list destinations whose statements still need to be requested.

If balances fail to carry forward, check for a missing statement or page before treating the difference as unexplained activity. A repeated PDF can create overlapping coverage without adding evidence. The bank statement reconciliation guide explains the next balance checks.

Follow up transfers to other Westpac accounts, including offset and savings accounts. Ask about transfers to St.George, Bank of Melbourne or BankSA accounts, which are Westpac Group brands. A transfer description alone does not establish who owns the receiving account.

FinTrace saves hours of manual statement review by turning Westpac PDFs and scanned paper statements into one searchable Excel ledger and a clear findings report. You can supply statements as held, including large volumes, without sorting or renaming them. Advanced AI workflows combine structured extraction with source checks and independent reviews. Suspicious transactions and unusual transfers are clearly flagged, with every finding cited to the PDF filename and source page.

Lawyers and forensic accountants can use the ledger to examine the supplied accounts together and keep more time for interpretation. FinTrace performs that statement-analysis work at a fraction of the cost of manual review or engaging a forensic accountant for the same task. To request a matter assessment, outline the accounts, approximate pages and timeframe. Supply the statements after assessment and quote acceptance.
